Let's just cut right to it, this show was painfully boring. There, I said it. A story built around partial amnesia has real potential, but between the choppy scene structure and random flashbacks thrown in constantly, the whole plot ends up feeling more tangled than it needed to be. The romance doesn't fare much better either, it's written so poorly that I never really found myself invested in this couple. Both leads come across stiff on screen and deliver their lines in a really awkward way. The show runs 8 episodes, each somewhere around 30 to 35 minutes. Hanuel, a 29 year old language teacher, wakes up after an accident only to realize his memory stops at age 19. It turns out he'd been in another accident back then too, which is why his memories cut off at that point. Every familiar face from the first three seasons shows back up, and honestly it's still a little disorienting because so many of these guys blend together visually. Adam and Gabe are engaged now, but between their job situations and money being tight, an actual wedding plus finding a place to live both feel out of reach. That's where their friends and family step in. Gabe pulls off a surprise wedding, small and intimate, exactly Adam's thing, and it turns out their old roommate hit it big with crypto and just hands them a house to live in, leaving them completely stunned. Adam's older brother Colin has settled into a stable relationship and is about to have a kid. A few episodes deal with the death of Adam's uncle, the guy who originally got him into photography. There's also a storyline about his cousin pining for his straight best friend, and Adam ends up playing matchmaker to get them both to admit their feelings for each other. A surprise gig lands Adam an underwear modeling job, which helps ease his money troubles and bumps up his profile. Then an old flame connects him with a famous singer who wants him to shoot her album cover, which boosts his fame even further and gets him an award nomination. He doesn't end up winning, but he's floored by how much his friends and family have shown up for him through everything, good and bad.
Same as the last two seasons, the storytelling here feels scattered, almost like filler in places. I really don't get why the writers keep piling on new characters when the cast was already stretched thin. It hits peak confusion during Adam's bachelor party, where you're surrounded by all these hot white guys with nearly identical builds, and good luck telling apart who's an old hookup, who's a cousin, who's a coworker. Cousin Colin and half brother Ethan, both from season three, are technically back but barely get any screen time. What this final season does get right is bringing Adam's arc to a real conclusion while checking back in on basically everyone who's popped up across the show. Adam's still his usual chaotic self, always one step from wrecking everything, but you can tell his heart's in the right place. Gabe and Adam do end up married, though their relationship still feels off to me, they're rarely actually present for each other. At every social event they're each off doing their own thing because the other one's too busy. It works for them somehow, but as a couple, I'm just not buying it. This season really leans into wrapping up the story while celebrating the friendships and family ties that built the whole series. And they pull that off reasonably well, definitely better than the last two seasons managed, though it still falls short of that first season and everything it promised. Adam's goofiness never quite landed for me either, it just always felt forced. The pansexual, non-binary, and other characters from across the spectrum get way less focus this time, which honestly didn't bother me. There's some sexy moments scattered in, a few laughs, but mostly more of the same. The actor playing Adam had four seasons to really build this character, but something about the performance still feels like it's missing something for me.The goofiness is there but it doesn't feel natural. I'm glad this show is finally wrapping up, and here's hoping whatever comes next is stronger. Maybe it's time someone brought back Please Like Me instead? Anyone out there listening? (5.5/10)
