Koi Naam Na Do (Hindi Series) [Don't Give It A Name]

This Indian series is being sold as a story about a gay man falling for his straight best friend but honestly, at its heart, it's really about friendship and what friendship can look like when it gets complicated and messy and emotionally loaded. It's available on the YouTube channel of Last Leaf Pictures, seven episodes of about 30 minutes each. I had mixed feelings throughout and a big part of that comes down to how I felt about one of the lead characters, but more on that in a bit. Anshul and Kavith are the two men at the centre of everything. They first meet on a train heading to Delhi, both of them not really ready to go back to their hometowns. They get off midway, turn around and head back to Mumbai to give themselves one more shot at the life they want there. Anshul is an aspiring actor with a young son back in Delhi living with his grandmother. Kavith is gay, freshly out of yet another relationship, his 17th by his own count over the years. The two strike up this unusu...

El Hombre de la Mandolina (Spanish)

To start with, the version of this movie I watched was just terrible. It looked so old that I felt like I was watching something from the 1950s. Since it came out in 1985, the movie doesn't shout about the main character being gay; instead, it gives you small, subtle hints. But even if the picture quality had been perfect, it wouldn't change the fact that this movie is really strange and just plain boring.

The story takes place in the city of Querétaro in 1957. It shows the mean things, violence, and hate that gay people had to deal with in Mexico during that time, especially in small towns. The main character is Jardiel, a young guy who lives with a mother who controls everything, a sweet father, and several brothers and sisters. He is secretly in love with his friend Carlos, who he went to college with and now works with. When Jardiel finally gets the nerve to tell Carlos how he feels, Carlos says no. This rejection sends Jardiel into a deep sadness, which gets even worse because his mother hates him and makes fun of him in front of everyone for being gay. She even takes away his clothes and wraps him in a bedsheet so he can't leave the house. Most of his siblings hate him, too. His father is too shy to help and eventually dies after seeing how much the mother tortures Jardiel. The four siblings have their own side stories, too: the brother is chasing a woman, one sister gets pregnant and is left behind by her boyfriend, and the other sister, Lulú, is the only one who actually loves and supports Jardiel. She eventually has to run away just to get away from their mean mother.

It seems like Mexican movies back then never really talked about being gay unless it was for a joke or to show shame. This film treats it like a tragedy—not because being gay is bad, but because the people around Jardiel are so cruel. The mandolin he plays represents what he’s allowed to be in public—talented and part of a group—while his life at home is full of things he’s forbidden to do. The mother is so evil that you will really hate her. At the same time, you have to cheer for Jardiel’s bravery for telling Carlos the truth about his feelings. Even though Carlos rejects him, they decide to stay friends. I’m not sure how other people will feel about this one, but for me, it just didn't work. Maybe it made more sense in Mexico when it was released, but as an international viewer, I was just very bored.

This is a dull and strange look at a dark time in history that fails to stay interesting for very long. (1.5/10)

Drug Shore (Chinese)

Apparently tis film was adapted by a true story Well, true or not, movies/series about drugs are not easy to watch. I have always said that drugs is like the end of life for anyone. For those who sink into this sea of addiction, some manage to swim upstream to recovery, while others cannot make it to the shore. The film may not be the best, but it does have a noble intention to remind everyone of the evil affects of drugs and combining that with sex. Ah Zhe is in a happy relationship with his influencer boyfriend. On his partner's birthday, they end up going to a party, which interestingly is being hosted at a drug dealer's house and this is where for the first time he is exposed to the world of drugs. The duo somehow do it just enough and come back home but next day Ah She gets invited by the dealer Xiao Fei for a meal. The dealer has a soft corner for Ah Zhe, but before anyone realizes, Ah Zhe's life spirals out of control when slowly he starts doing more and more drugs, ...

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Unknown to him, he is saved by mysterious man Yoda Ryoji, and he wakes up finding himself tied up in leather and belts in a very BDSM setting. This mysterious saver soo...

Gaya Sa Pelikula (Filipino Series) [Like In The Movies]

Pinoy BL series seem to be catching up to the popularity of the Thai shows. And I must say that they are doing a pretty good job at it. Where Thai series started to get repetitive with so many shows based in a college setting with seemingly similar storylines, Pinoy series are offering the viewers with new and interesting stories and some really good sets and surroundings. This series was 8 episodes of about 25-20 minutes each. Karl, a 19-year old introvert architecture student is in the middle of an identity crisis. Prior to the start of the second semester in college and forced by his parents, he moves into his uncle's condominium unit so that he can learn to be financially independent. Karl takes on odd jobs online to do so. But when one of his major clients suddenly goes MIA, he is left short on funds and without a means to pay for his utilities. An opportunity presents itself when his cocky neighbor Vlad has to hide from his family and proposes to share Karl's space for th...
