Contrast (Japanese Series)

This is basically a high school BL where two guys who have nothing going on in common somehow end up getting really close to each other, and that's kind of the whole point of the title too. There's barely any drama or fluff packed in here, it stays pretty straightforward the whole way through. A little bit of friction pops up here and there, but it's nothing compared to what you'd normally get in this kind of show. Runtime wise you're looking at 8 episodes, each one sitting around 25-30 minutes. The two guys carrying the story are Akira and Kanata, and funny enough they knew each other's faces way before they ever knew each other's names. Kanata's the type everyone likes, always got people around him, popular guy, but there's this distance to him that people can't quite place. Turns out he had an injury that ended his football days, and that's what pushed him into being more withdrawn, and it only got worse once his younger brother got picked...

Rien de 9 - Season 1 (French Series) [Nothing New]

This show from back in early 2000's was such a drab to watch. I can guarantee you that some of the college film projects are probably more sophisticated, better directed and acted than this one. Also, the story of this show was all over the place. Apparently there were two more seasons of the show and I seriously hope I do not have to watch them. The first season had 11 episodes of about 8-9 minutes average.

Maykel and Johannes, a gay couple, just broke-up and Maykel is now a mess and is also taking anti-depressants. Still in love with Johannes, he seeks help from his friend Margaret, an old lover from high school , whom he also dated for 2 years. It seems she still has feelings for Maykel too. Enter another girl from high school Esther, who apparently was friends with him and suddenly shows up unannounced and gets almost attached to hip of Maykel. And then one day Maykel meets another high school friend of his Greg. Esther decides that it's time to resort to drastic measures, and creates a Facebook profile for Maykel, hoping that Johannes will see it and become jealous. While Maykel and Esther are closer and closer each day, Greg doesn't know what to do to seduce her. As a last idea, he takes advice from Margaret, who literally pushed Greg and Esther together because somewhere she wants Maykel to herself. Watching Greg and Esther kiss each other suddenly makes Maykel jealous and he decides now he is back straight and likes Esther. Suddenly Johannes is back and asks for forgiveness for cheating and that Maykel take him back and also at the same time, almost everyone decides to leave the town and move. Maykel now need to decide between Johannes, Esther and Margaret.

I can't begin to tell you how badly acted and directed this show was.And al these people who were falling head over heels one after the other run love with Maykel, had not one single redeeming quality about him that could make you believe that these people wants Maykel. He is drab, bore and frankly not even good looking in the strictest sense of way. Sure, when the producer /director of the show decides to give the lead role to himself , what do you expect. Less I say about the other actors, the better it is. It's like everyone is after everyone, and they are all going through some secret of wanting to be with Maykel, as if he is some Greek God. All girls/boys totally falling for him. Please! who are you kidding here. Stay away from this one. Suddenly all these bad Thai series are starting to look very professional. I still find it hard to believe someone actually financed to make two more seasons after this. (1/10)

I think the budget of this film was probably too small, but for that, the film definitely offers a different and unique storyline without over dramatizing anything. Yes, some scenes were a bit amateurish but in the bigger scheme of things, that can be overlooked. The film is both beautiful and sad in its own unique way. Gaya Sa Pelikula (Filipino Series) [Like In The Movies]

Pinoy BL series seem to be catching up to the popularity of the Thai shows. And I must say that they are doing a pretty good job at it. Where Thai series started to get repetitive with so many shows based in a college setting with seemingly similar storylines, Pinoy series are offering the viewers with new and interesting stories and some really good sets and surroundings. This series was 8 episodes of about 25-20 minutes each. Karl, a 19-year old introvert architecture student is in the middle of an identity crisis. Prior to the start of the second semester in college and forced by his parents, he moves into his uncle's condominium unit so that he can learn to be financially independent. The Tuxedo (Thai Series)

When I saw this series with 8 episodes of about 20-25 minutes each, I thought, good: Finally someone has come to senses and made a show which is not stretched out and they have tried to squeeze in a decent storyline in a good small episode format. But unfortunately, despite a decent premise on hand, the clunky writing, bad screenplay and an extreme tasteless portrayal of mental illness makes this show, not a fun watch. By the time it finishes, you just want to laugh off at the entire absurdity of it all.
