A Revry original, Unconventional is a really well-liked queer dramedy that feels totally different from the usual stuff. The heart of the story is about two pretty eccentric queer siblings and their partners trying to build a family that doesn't follow the traditional rules. It takes a super raw and unfiltered look at queer life, diving deep into things like mental health, addiction, and how complicated identity and relationships can get. It’s not afraid to get messy or show people at their most vulnerable, and it really pushes boundaries while showing a lot of different queer experiences. The first season has nine episodes, and each one is about a half-hour long. The story centers on Noah, a grad student who’s been struggling for years to wrap up his PhD. He’s been with his husband, Dan, for nine years, and they’ve recently gotten married and moved to Palm Springs. While they're trying to figure out how to start a family and have a baby, they decide to shake things up by in...
This show should be avoided completely. Firstly, the show is clearly left midway after 6 episodes. There is no proper conclusion and as audience we are left with a lot of questions. I read online, that the makers did not pay the actors because of which they left the show midway and hence the so called 'incomplete' show. Which Actually might be a blessing in disguise, because the acting and direction of this show were so ridiculously bad. But then you never know, the makers may hire a new crew and make season 2 for all you know. For now this series was 6 episodes of 50 minutes each.
Nerdy student Nu is told by an astrologer that once he encounters three mishaps, he will find a sexy hot man as love of his life. While walking to college, he is almost hit by Sun who was driving his car. Sun a second year medical student. Once he goes to college, he meets Chain, a senior on his faculty who seems to like Nu. Since Nu is a nerd, he is unable to make many friends, and Chain introduces him to his sister and they become friends. Turns out Chain used to be friends with Sun and his gang of friends, but Chain snatched Sun's girlfriend from him and ever since there has been an issue. One drunken night, Sun takes Nu home and Nu kisses him and they sleep together. A hook up soon starts to turn into love. It turns out that their fathers used to be friends and Sun's father used to work for Nu's father and Nu and Sun know each other since they were kids. In parallel, we see Chain is trying to pursue Nu but he gets rejected. Using this opportunity, one of Sun's friend kidnaps Chain and tortures him and rapes him. Suddenly we see Stockholm's syndrome coming into picture and before you know this kidnapper and Chain can't keep their hands off each other. In parallel, we are also shown a story of a high school, where 3 mean girls are trying to control a student president election. Among the two guys running, one is really not keen and was forced by the girls to run. He also wears glasses. So he promises his opponent that he will help him become the winner. We see a lot of that story but since the show ended abruptly, I am not sure how this was connected to the main story. Back to Sun and Nu, there is some miscommunication and some drama where Nu sees Sun kissing his ex-girlfriend. But they talk through and get back together, only to get a surprise visit from Nu's fiancé (who, by the way, did not exist at all). There is also lesbian love story of Chian's sister and her partner.
This show should not have been made. It is truly awful, right from writing to acting to direction. Both Sun and Nu are just not good actors. Especially Sun looks more like an evil guy and being romantic just doesn't suit him. This was such a poorly executed plot and incoherent character development. This drama fails both as entertainment and as responsible media. Very casually it shows non-consensual sex, glorifying rape, cheating, and then high school students doing adult like activities. Even if you look at. The main story plot, Nu is this nerdy guy who no one likes and accidentally when he breaks his glasses, everyone finds him extremely attractive and he joins the college pageant. WTF!!!! His and Sun's relationship slowly picked up and that was fine but how and why did Chain like Nu was never explained. Chain did not have an iota of remorse when he kissed Sun's then girlfriend. It was a total mess. One only good thing about the show was we get to see Chain's ass in full glory. Now this was something I had not expected from Thai Bl but kudos. This show has 3 very different stories forced into 1 story and it's taped together with painter's tape, hopes, and dreams. Avoid. (3/10)
