On The Sea (UK)

This one's a beautiful, tender, quiet romantic drama with a moody atmosphere, set in a tight knit Welsh fishing community. It's a touching story about a man waking up sexually in the middle of his life, and how he, his family, and everyone around him deal with it, which makes it emotional and sentimental without ever getting over the top. The slow burn plays out against a landscape that's as bleak as it is gorgeous, where quiet, closed off men are stuck inside rigid ideas of what masculinity should be. Some people might be reminded of "God's Own Country," but I think both films are lovely in their own way. Jack is a middle aged guy who co-owns a mussel farm with his rough around the edges brother Dyfan, and the tension between the two of them is simmering under the surface right from the start. Dyfan's three sons all help out with the work, while Jack's sulky teenage son Tom keeps skipping out. Jack's been with his wife since they were both 16, and...

Pantyhose Hero (Cantonese)

Like a lot of movies from the nineties, this goofy action comedy throws a bit of everything at you, wild fight scenes, ridiculous stunts, dumb humor, and some straight up drama mixed in too. It probably landed fine back in the day given how silly it was and honestly how casually homophobic that era's comedy tended to be, but stuff like this just doesn't hold up watching it now. Sitting through it today feels pretty strange. That said, I'll admit there were a handful of scenes I genuinely had fun with just because of how ridiculous they were.

The setup is that a serial killer's out there murdering gay men, so two cop buddies get assigned to infiltrate the scene by posing as a gay couple themselves. Neither of them's thrilled about it, but they don't really get a say in the matter. So they end up going through this intense three day crash course on basically how to act gay. Once that's done, they rent an apartment, play it up as a couple, and head off to a gay bar trying to either get hit on or hit on other guys themselves. Meanwhile, there's a gang leader who's convinced the two of them know where a stash of drugs is hidden, since the previous tenants of their apartment had the drugs before the killer got to them. There's a car chase thrown in at some point too, which leads to one of the cops running into a girl he instantly falls for, except she's under the impression that he's actually gay. A few more scenes follow where the other cop is trying to piece together who the killer actually is and why he's doing this. At one point the killer shows up to take one of them out but ends up getting away. And of course the big climax happens in an abandoned warehouse, where the two cops, along with the femme fatale, take on the entire gang plus the killer who finally shows his face.

Here's the thing, if you go into this expecting any kind of thoughtful gay storytelling, you're going to find a thousand problems with it pretty fast. But if you just watch it as a dumb action comedy, there's actually some fun to be had in how silly it all is. The training scenes where this woman teaches the cops how to "be gay" ended up being some of the funniest stuff I've watched in a while, I genuinely laughed out loud, which doesn't happen that often for me. The middle section does drag a bit though, turning into pretty standard kidnapping and action beats that feel like they've been done a hundred times in movies like this. The fight choreography is actually solid, even if a lot of the comedy leans on gay jokes and stereotypes to land. Honestly, I didn't take any of it too seriously and just went in looking for a good time, and it did manage to keep me entertained in a few spots. Overall it's a mixed bag, some good laughs, some solid action, but outside of that, it's pretty forgettable. (4/10)

The Tuxedo (Thai Series)

When I saw this series with 8 episodes of about 20-25 minutes each, I thought, good: Finally someone has come to senses and made a show which is not stretched out and they have tried to squeeze in a decent storyline in a good small episode format. But unfortunately, despite a decent premise on hand, the clunky writing, bad screenplay and an extreme tasteless portrayal of mental illness makes this show, not a fun watch. By the time it finishes, you just want to laugh off at the entire absurdity of it all. Aioun is talented tuxedo designer and very much in demand but he has handful of clients and he builds suits only for people who he feels a connection to. One night when his younger brother is about to get mugged, he is helped by a total stranger named Sichol. Since he tears his suit in the fight and has an interview the next day, Aioun gifts him a suit form his design as an expression of thanks. Sichol's interview is for. Personal assistant of a man named Nawee, a wealthy heir to h...

Heartstopper: Season 2 (Web Series) (UK)

Heartstopper Season 1 was a universal hit. You could not have read one bad review or heard from anyone who has seen the show not liking it. It was the kind of series that is easy to love, with sweetness exploding out of every scene without overwhelming you. So naturally, when Netflix greenly Season 2, expectations were naturally high and the same happened with me. I didn't know what to expect, but I had high expectations of this very very sweet teenage love story. And with eagerness and being a little late to the game by a few days, here I am, pouring my t thoughts down having just finished one of the most anticipated shows of the year. The second season also has 10 episodes and has all of our loved ones from the original season. The show continues from where it had left off in Season 1. Charlie and Nick are a couple and only their very close circle of friends know about it. This includes Charlie's best friend Tao and his trans best friend Elle. The center of the show is still ...

Gaya Sa Pelikula (Filipino Series) [Like In The Movies]

Pinoy BL series seem to be catching up to the popularity of the Thai shows. And I must say that they are doing a pretty good job at it. Where Thai series started to get repetitive with so many shows based in a college setting with seemingly similar storylines, Pinoy series are offering the viewers with new and interesting stories and some really good sets and surroundings. This series was 8 episodes of about 25-20 minutes each. Karl, a 19-year old introvert architecture student is in the middle of an identity crisis. Prior to the start of the second semester in college and forced by his parents, he moves into his uncle's condominium unit so that he can learn to be financially independent. Karl takes on odd jobs online to do so. But when one of his major clients suddenly goes MIA, he is left short on funds and without a means to pay for his utilities. An opportunity presents itself when his cocky neighbor Vlad has to hide from his family and proposes to share Karl's space for th...
