A Revry original, Unconventional is a really well-liked queer dramedy that feels totally different from the usual stuff. The heart of the story is about two pretty eccentric queer siblings and their partners trying to build a family that doesn't follow the traditional rules. It takes a super raw and unfiltered look at queer life, diving deep into things like mental health, addiction, and how complicated identity and relationships can get. It’s not afraid to get messy or show people at their most vulnerable, and it really pushes boundaries while showing a lot of different queer experiences. The first season has nine episodes, and each one is about a half-hour long. The story centers on Noah, a grad student who’s been struggling for years to wrap up his PhD. He’s been with his husband, Dan, for nine years, and they’ve recently gotten married and moved to Palm Springs. I understand the need for spoof and indie cinema, which empowers film makers to come up with random Idas with minimal budget to explore their artistic side. But I still feel there has to be some sense of meaning here as well with respect to the message that is being said. This film again misses on that and comes out as an amateurish attempt at comedy.
Jesus is kicked out of Heaven for being a homosexual, stripped of his powers and cast down to Earth as punishment. He suffers a mental breakdown and creates an alter ego as a wizard. After an altercation, an Atheist jerk, a poor guy down on his luck, and a woman with a strange religious fetish discover his true identity. They ultimately decide to try and help Jesus get his powers back, but not without catching the attention of some maniacal protesters in town.
This is nothing to do with me being judgmental about religious parody or hurting anyone's emotions; but I thought that the film was simply bad. And this may be my personal feedback. The film could have been better , for sure. The story is the perfect parody of that thought process. The film takes several jabs at contradictory principles found in the bible while delivering some pretty fucking funny moments. But the execution falters big time. I didn't even chuckle, forget smiling. In fact, you could find me rolling my eyes. All in all, its a very very niche film for people who are into weird fanatic twisted comedies that rarely makes most people laugh. Ignore this one as well. (1.5/10)
