A Revry original, Unconventional is a really well-liked queer dramedy that feels totally different from the usual stuff. The heart of the story is about two pretty eccentric queer siblings and their partners trying to build a family that doesn't follow the traditional rules. It takes a super raw and unfiltered look at queer life, diving deep into things like mental health, addiction, and how complicated identity and relationships can get. It’s not afraid to get messy or show people at their most vulnerable, and it really pushes boundaries while showing a lot of different queer experiences. The first season has nine episodes, and each one is about a half-hour long. The story centers on Noah, a grad student who’s been struggling for years to wrap up his PhD. He’s been with his husband, Dan, for nine years, and they’ve recently gotten married and moved to Palm Springs. While they're trying to figure out how to start a family and have a baby, they decide to shake things up by in...
The film is set in the red light districts of Thailand focusing on the problems, issues and things that sex workers face on a day to day basis. Unfortunately, a shoddy direction combined with bad acting makes this film an unbearable watch.
Ahh Fat is a “shemale” sex worker at a bar owned by terrible owners who only cares about profits and gangs. She is going through some psychological turmoil and is looking for redemption. She ends up making friends with 2 other co-workers: a sex worker who simply chores through life after a mysterious event that turned her from being the boss of the bar to being used as for sex and a male gay gigolo Pumpkin. Ah Fat finds a strange, unique sort of happiness in friendship that had evaded her for a long time. Then comes a turn of events that changes everything; Ah Fat will have to choose between saving his friends by killing the evil shop owner, and standing idly by. This is the final straw; Ah Fat is pushed to the brink, all hell breaks loose.
After trying to patiently watch the film for 20-25 odd minutes I finally gave up. None of what was unfolding in front of me was making much sense. There were unnecessary sex scenes (which you can expect since the film is set in a club in red-light district, but then there is a limit. There are a lot of darker moments in the film that makes suicidal people a common practice amongst sex workers in Thailand. But none of them is really explored. It's shown in a scene and the film just moves on without delving deeper. The acting (which I guess is mostly new folks) is terrible. Actor playing Ah Fat is supposed to show her body naked so people can see boobs and dick at the same time, which is clearly just for sensationalizing purpose. No clarity is provided about backgrounds of any of these folks of how/when/why?
This is a terrible waste of time. If this is 1/3, I really hope either the rest 2 parts never come out, or at least I dont have to watch them. I dont even know why I am reviewing this here. I hope this can save others the trouble and stay away from the film. (1/10)
