A Revry original, Unconventional is a really well-liked queer dramedy that feels totally different from the usual stuff. The heart of the story is about two pretty eccentric queer siblings and their partners trying to build a family that doesn't follow the traditional rules. It takes a super raw and unfiltered look at queer life, diving deep into things like mental health, addiction, and how complicated identity and relationships can get. It’s not afraid to get messy or show people at their most vulnerable, and it really pushes boundaries while showing a lot of different queer experiences. The first season has nine episodes, and each one is about a half-hour long. The story centers on Noah, a grad student who’s been struggling for years to wrap up his PhD. Min Jae is a new study in the music faculty of a university. Here, he mets Yoon Chan a couple of times, including in the library where Min Jae works part time. For no obvious reasons, Yoon Chan falls for Min Jae and starts conversations to befriend him. Turns out Yoon Chan is a taekwondo student and seems has no other friends. They both decide to become friends after some random meetings between the two. It is more evident that Yoon Chan is putting more effort. Initially Min Jae is a bit irritated by this but slowly he comes around and starts liking the guy. As they spend more time together, their friendship evolves. Romantic feelings begin to surface, although neither admits to them initially. Enter the third wheel, a new student one year junior in music faculty. This junior immediately takes a liking for Min Jae and also wants to pursue. This junior and Yoon Chan's feud puts Min Jae in a tricky position as he must choose between friends. Eventually Min Jae accepts his feelings and confirms his love for Yoon Chan and they together start working in a cafe as lovers. The series ends with a stranger showing up at the cafe surprising Min Jae. Possibility of next season here.
Firstly, what kind of university is this where there are a total of only 4 students. You do not see anyone else either in campus or library. I mean, I understand there are no other characters, but you still have to use the space to fill it up , given it is a full on university. Why does Yoon Chan falls for Minjae? No details are shown. When Yoon's senior shows up announcing he has no friends, it is just a random scene and if he difficulties making friends, then what is so special about Minjae. I thought we will get to see some back story of Yoon Chan but nothing of thats sorts happen. I guess the makers wanted to show that the two boys and aloof and lonely in their own ways and how destiny brings them together, but honestly the treatment was just dull and boring. From boring small talk to mundane interactions, most scenes aren't that fun to watch. They almost force themselves to become friends and then out of nowhere a romance happens. Their attraction doesn't make sense when the characters hardly know each other. The idea to create drama by a love triangle was clearly so forced. The show could have ended after episode 5, but they spend like a 30 minute final episode which is all fluff and them being Lovey-dovey. The actors look good and do a. Fine job, but t=when the script itself is so basic and mundane, there is nothing anyone can do. This is one of the more disappointing Korean shows. (3/10)
