On paper this should've been a show I really got into, especially with how much love it's been getting from fans online, but somehow it just didn't click for me. The first four or five episodes had me so lost that I started checking out mentally, and honestly it never really recovered from that for me. There were definitely bits here and there that I enjoyed, but as a whole it just felt like too much was happening at once and I kept losing my grip on what I was watching. Doesn't help either that this is a twelve episode series where each episode runs somewhere between seventy and ninety minutes in its uncut version, that's a lot to sit through and process. It's been one year since Beau's wife Lily died and now Beau and Lily's brother Caden have been living together as a couple. They receive a post dated letter from Lily informing them that she had frozen her eggs before she got cancer and she would love if Beau would have kids with that which would help Lily live on. Initially both Caden and Beau are not sure and they discuss all kinds of potential challenges and issues that could arise because of having kids. For one, Caden feels he has never been a responsible person and other, how will they manage. Eventually they agree and meet the doctors and decide to give it a go. Caden reaches out to his ex-girlfriend to see if she would be willing to be a surrogate for the couple. She agrees but in a moment of weakness Caden ends up hoking up with her. Thankfully he comes back and tells Beau the truth who feels cheated but Caden talks how they both never talked about how is their relationship eventually gonna play out, given that they both used to have girlfriends in the past. The duo try a threesome with a woman but decide it's not their thing. When Caden informs his parents, his mother also proposes to be a surrogate for her daughter's kids. Eventually both the women carry one embryo each and film ends with a baby shower scene indicating happy future.
As I mentioned before, The story of the film is relevant and t actually tackles pretty important things. Beau and Caden talk and discuss all kinds of potential challenges that can happen if they became fathers; from simple thing like will they be officially gay couple, or who will stay home, or how to responsible etc. Thankfully they both go to sessions, talk to their friends and only when they are convinced they take the next action. I liked the fact that the film doesn't show Caden and Beau as this perfect couple. They are figuring things out for themselves. As a couple where do they stand, what about kids and anything further. So, in that sense the film indirectly emphasizes the importance of communication. I really liked the fact that the two would discuss every topic under the sun that impacts them and not Mae any assumptions and that was great. But still somehow the film doesn't connect with me emotionally. It feels very rehearsed. It's not like people do bad acting or anything, but I think this is where the magic of director comes in where you make the characters connect with audience. It almost feels like those independent gay films that came out a lot in late 2000's . Also , why did Caden have to dye his hair blonde? It just doesn't suit him. He looked so much hot in the original film. I know, I am being superficial.
Anyway, The story choice was interesting, the growth of the couple was nice, but still something big is missing overall making this a strictly average film. (5/10)
