Being at Home with Claude (Canadian French)

This one falls into that darker corner of gay cinema. There was real potential buried in here, but the execution feels so flat that at points it plays out more like a filmed stage play than an actual movie. It's a dark psychological drama built around a street hustler confessing to a brutal, confusing murder of his own lover. Black and white flashback sequences do a solid job laying out the details of what happened, but the real focus stays on the dialogue and the writing itself. Right at the start, a young hustler has already killed his male lover Claude. Three days go by before he calls the police to turn himself in for the murder. But instead of just reporting it somewhere ordinary, he actually summons the police and the local press directly into a judge's private chambers. Yves has keys to the place, which tracks given what he does for a living, but having the press waiting right outside makes the whole scene look like some elaborate blackmail scheme against the judge. Restart After Come Back Home (Japanese)

This is again one of those films where being gay (or bi) just happens to be there. That is no what the core plot of the film is. The film is about relationships, family, future and at the core, what I important to you as an individual and the people that come in your life tome it special. The film was Avery pleasant surprise in sense that it had my attention from the very get go with its beautiful laidback countryside charm and the chemistry that its two leads bring.

Mitsuomi quits his job and Tokyo to come back to his hometown hoping to join his father's furniture business. But the father hasn't forgotten how 10 years back his son rejected the same job to do something on his own. Mitsuomi meets Yamato, who has a noticeably perky and bubbly personality. He is the adopted son of a family friend and same age as Mitsuomi. Eager to befriend the new arrival in town, Yamato invites Mitsuomi to work at his grandfather’s farm. Although Mitsuomi is reluctant at first, he starts helping Yamato and his grandpa harvest crops during this busy season. Tired at first, Mitsuomi son learns the ways of working and the two boys become vey close friends. They talk about their families. The lazy and cynical Mitsuomi can't help but get charmed by Yamato’s perpetually infectious enthusiasm towards life. He even finds himself getting attracted to him and kisses him one night but is afraid of where this will lead. Also in the meantime, Yamato makes Mitsuomi realize that all it will take is an apology to mend relations with his father. When Yamato's adoptive father falls sick, he decides to look for his birth parents to close that chapter of his life and its this trip where the two boys confess love and closeness to each other, understanding very well that they both are men and they don't know what it means, but they do like each other a lot.

Once the film ends, my first thoughts were what a refreshingly charming and simple yet loving film. As Mitsuomi says at one point in the film, if I was to meet someone like Yamato in real life, I would find him annoying too first few times but its only later you will realize how selfless love and friendship works. You just give, without expecting anything in return. The film has no unnecessary tests because of sexuality or anything else, it goes on in a simple flow with its two very very likable characters. The acting is very natural and the emotions shows even by the family members are very subtle which adds to the reality of the whole thing. The two boys are not young, but they also don't really understand what loving someone of the same sex means. They will have a hard journey ahead probably, but for now, they both, with support and love from each other, want to move ahead. I like the natural progression of their romance, even though I do think this movie could’ve offered a bit more BL content between them. The film is also a lot about family, need fo sit, support of family and why may be the most important thing in life. As you grow older, you start realizing this. The film resonated very well with me with its story, setting and what it was overall trying to say. The gay in me of course wanted more of love scenes and general BL content between the two men, but that's not what the makers were thinking and it Italy makes sense.

Highly recommend this film, if you are looking to watch something positive, loving and pleasantly charming. This film will no doubt bring a wide smile to your face. (8.5/10)

Loved this one a lot, you made a wonderful review I agree with 100%. I really would have wanted more BL relationship too, given how cute those 2 are. Yamato positive energy is contagious! I love how being gay is just a part of the whole thing, and coming back to your roots is a more important aspect than your sexuality.
The contryside setting made me think of the fantastic HIS movie too, but with a different feeling.
Looking back, I realize Japan makes a lot of excellent gay series/movies (except when it's school yaoi). Please keep them coming !!

Actually u r right.. now that I think of it, Japan has indeed produced some really good BL content. For some odd reason, they just have never achieved the popularity that some Thai shows have.

It might be because the target is not exactly the same? I feel japanese gay movies feel more real, pleasing gays more, when Thai BL is primarily for young girls with codes sometimes far from the "real" gay world. I still like thai BL a lot, they feel even more Disney than Christmas movies lol (and at least we had something to watch in covid times because western gay series were somewhat rare).
If I wanted to compare, I'd say the few japanese "BL in school world" I tried to watch were horrible compared to thai ones.
Talking about japanese in real gay world, I don't know if you had put "kinou nani tabeta" (what did you eat yesterday) in your list but I absolutely loved it :)

I am going to add that to my list right away.

yes, u r right that Thai BL content indeed kept us busy and entertained during covid times. Unfortunately, with work starting back full time now, and so much regular stuff to watch too, there are just not enough hours in the day anymore. lol

The Tuxedo (Thai Series)

When I saw this series with 8 episodes of about 20-25 minutes each, I thought, good: Finally someone has come to senses and made a show which is not stretched out and they have tried to squeeze in a decent storyline in a good small episode format. But unfortunately, despite a decent premise on hand, the clunky writing, bad screenplay and an extreme tasteless portrayal of mental illness makes this show, not a fun watch. By the time it finishes, you just want to laugh off at the entire absurdity of it all. Aioun is talented tuxedo designer and very much in demand but he has handful of clients and he builds suits only for people who he feels a connection to. One night when his younger brother is about to get mugged, he is helped by a total stranger named Sichol. Since he tears his suit in the fight and has an interview the next day, Aioun gifts him a suit form his design as an expression of thanks. Sichol's interview is for. Personal assistant of a man named Nawee, a wealthy heir to h...

Heartstopper: Season 2 (Web Series) (UK)

Heartstopper Season 1 was a universal hit. You could not have read one bad review or heard from anyone who has seen the show not liking it. It was the kind of series that is easy to love, with sweetness exploding out of every scene without overwhelming you. So naturally, when Netflix greenly Season 2, expectations were naturally high and the same happened with me. I didn't know what to expect, but I had high expectations of this very very sweet teenage love story. And with eagerness and being a little late to the game by a few days, here I am, pouring my t thoughts down having just finished one of the most anticipated shows of the year. The second season also has 10 episodes and has all of our loved ones from the original season. The show continues from where it had left off in Season 1. Charlie and Nick are a couple and only their very close circle of friends know about it. This includes Charlie's best friend Tao and his trans best friend Elle. The center of the show is still ...

Gaya Sa Pelikula (Filipino Series) [Like In The Movies]

Pinoy BL series seem to be catching up to the popularity of the Thai shows. And I must say that they are doing a pretty good job at it. Where Thai series started to get repetitive with so many shows based in a college setting with seemingly similar storylines, Pinoy series are offering the viewers with new and interesting stories and some really good sets and surroundings. This series was 8 episodes of about 25-20 minutes each. Karl, a 19-year old introvert architecture student is in the middle of an identity crisis. Prior to the start of the second semester in college and forced by his parents, he moves into his uncle's condominium unit so that he can learn to be financially independent. Karl takes on odd jobs online to do so. But when one of his major clients suddenly goes MIA, he is left short on funds and without a means to pay for his utilities. An opportunity presents itself when his cocky neighbor Vlad has to hide from his family and proposes to share Karl's space for th...
