A Revry original, Unconventional is a really well-liked queer dramedy that feels totally different from the usual stuff. The heart of the story is about two pretty eccentric queer siblings and their partners trying to build a family that doesn't follow the traditional rules. It takes a super raw and unfiltered look at queer life, diving deep into things like mental health, addiction, and how complicated identity and relationships can get. It’s not afraid to get messy or show people at their most vulnerable, and it really pushes boundaries while showing a lot of different queer experiences. The first season has nine episodes, and each one is about a half-hour long. The story centers on Noah, a grad student who’s been struggling for years to wrap up his PhD. He’s been with his husband, Dan, for nine years, and they’ve recently gotten married and moved to Palm Springs. A young man who heads to a tattooist for the first of a series of appointments to create a design on his stomach. The intimacy of having another man’s hands on him stirs things and he starts to fall for the tattooist, but does the other man realize what’s going on? It’s a neat little short that doesn’t add up to an awful lot, but certainly manages to create a sense of sexual tension.
El Primo [The Cousin]
When a guy visits his friend for summer, he finds himself getting attracted to his friend's cousin, whose bulge seems to be constantly on display, but tries to keep his feeling to himself. In terms of creating sexual tension, this is probably the strongest of the six and I could feel it in my bones. It intriguing when you are unsure how other person will react if you make a move. Something like this has happened with me so many times during my teen years.
El Otro [The Other One]
Two young friends are hanging out talking about their girlfriends whence of them mentions that his dick has grown so big that his girlfriend is afraid off having sex. The other guy thinks that its probably because he’s too quick and rough, and that’s what puts the women off. They end up in their underpants, showing one another how to be more tender in the sack. Then starts all sorts of foreplay with one of the guy showing moves in an almost nude state. The acting is a bit off but it still creates a sexual tension.
Los Bravos Loto [Broken Arms]
An injured man who’s being looked after by a nurse. During a changeover of carers, he spies on his new male nurse getting into his scrubs, and then has to be showered by him. The short plays on the intimacy of the moment, not necessarily creating any sexual tension. Weakest of these all.
Amor [In Love]
A man with his girlfriend is on a holiday. After chatting with the guy who runs the holiday place, a mix-up ends with one almost touching the other’s penis. Problems with the plumbing then result in the two guys showering together. As with some of the earlier shorts, the film deliberately withholds whether there really is sexual tension between the men.
Entrenamiento [Workout]
Routine workout scenes between two friends start this erotic short complete with touching and intimacy of that. Later on they end up taking sexy photos of one another to send to some women, which ends up escalating until one wants to take a shot of the other’s erection. The short wonderfully plays with the idea that maybe one guy is actually playing with the other to get closer to them sexually, but it takes one too any tricks.
Director Marco Berger again does a supremely well job of creating sexual tension between males, just like he always does in his full length feature films. The feeling of a current going through you ,with sexual anticipations and full of tease, this was a thrill watch but of a very sensual nature. (6/10)
