A Revry original, Unconventional is a really well-liked queer dramedy that feels totally different from the usual stuff. The heart of the story is about two pretty eccentric queer siblings and their partners trying to build a family that doesn't follow the traditional rules. It takes a super raw and unfiltered look at queer life, diving deep into things like mental health, addiction, and how complicated identity and relationships can get. It’s not afraid to get messy or show people at their most vulnerable, and it really pushes boundaries while showing a lot of different queer experiences. The first season has nine episodes, and each one is about a half-hour long. The story centers on Noah, a grad student who’s been struggling for years to wrap up his PhD. He’s been with his husband, Dan, for nine years, and they’ve recently gotten married and moved to Palm Springs. There is absolutely no story here. Tharn and Type have been together now for 7 years. Both busy in their career but Type's boss gives him a hard time at work, because of which sometimes there are arguments between the couple. Nothing crazy. Then we suddenly have this new couple Phu and Cir as their neighbors, who really add nothing to the plot, but hey are just there. We meet Fiat, a basketball player, who when he hurts himself, is being treated by Type as Physical therapist and becomes obsessed with Type and eventually becomes the big reason for the conflict between Tharn and Type. And then finally our fourth couple is Champ and Doctor (continued from original series). Their chemistry is cute but nothing that I care about. The major theme os the sequel is whether they will get married or not. Tharn wants to get married but Type is against, primarily because of his parents. When Tharn sees Fait kissing a drunk Type, his possessiveness comes all out and he blames Type, thereby causing a rift and Type asking them to take a break. Misunderstandings are cleared Type decides to become a monk (wtf!) and after about a year they decide to eventually get married. Their marriage is actually what's covered in the last special episode.
Firstly, the way Tharn and Type behave as a couple, do not look like someone who have been together for 7 years. They look more like 7 months. Constant mistrust, jealousy, fights, misunderstanding on the minutest of issues is something you will see when someone new gets into a relationship. They act like babies and it's frustrating to watch. Within first two episodes I realized this was not going to be fun like the original. The only good thing is that every episode had a lot of kissing between the two and Tharn pretty much wanting to get into Type's pants. I mean it was good to watch it initially but after a while it started to feel so mechanical. They would be talking and suddenly Tharn would force himself on Type, and generally out of no. foreplay or chemistry, they would be at it. It was weird. Then lets talk about when Tharn sees Fiat kiss Type. Howcome Tharn sees Fiat kiss Type but not when Type pushed him away and yelled at him? How is that even possible? It was like they had to force an issue in the series just for the hell of it. All other characters were just strictly ok. You could care less about what's happening in their world. Phu and Cir were like the most boring people ever. One of my favorite characters Techno is back in his usual self, but clearly he hasn't grown one bit in seven years, so in this new context, the same guy gets annoying. He is a clown all the time. Come on.. give me a break. I am really hard pressed to find anything positive to say about this show. I could go on and on with examples on how so many things in this show didn't make any sense, but what's the point.
I know I am late in my review, but if you were delaying like me to watch this sequel, stop right here and don't even bother. An extremely boring and disappointing sequel. These boys deserved better. (3/10)
