This one's a beautiful, tender, quiet romantic drama with a moody atmosphere, set in a tight knit Welsh fishing community. It's a touching story about a man waking up sexually in the middle of his life, and how he, his family, and everyone around him deal with it, which makes it emotional and sentimental without ever getting over the top. The slow burn plays out against a landscape that's as bleak as it is gorgeous, where quiet, closed off men are stuck inside rigid ideas of what masculinity should be. Some people might be reminded of "God's Own Country," but I think both films are lovely in their own way. Jack is a middle aged guy who co-owns a mussel farm with his rough around the edges brother Dyfan, and the tension between the two of them is simmering under the surface right from the start. Dyfan's three sons all help out with the work, while Jack's sulky teenage son Tom keeps skipping out. Jack's been with his wife since they were both 16, and...
We see the film with Caleb in jail and doesn't remember what has happened and a detective trying to find the truth. Extremely good looking Caleb is dealing with a lot of issues and baggage with his family, especially his abusive mother. But outwardly he seems to be coping well with all of those. He meets Jeremy, a slightly older man, who seems to be hiding something but the two connect and they fall in love eventually. Caleb tells Jeremy that he had this abusive mother and he has moved from homes to homes but what essentially has happened is that Caleb has inherited his weird personality disorder from her. When Caleb finds out that Jeremy is married, he loses his control completely and makes Jeremy his prisoner and tortures him for a few days before his wife comes looking for him. IN an act of violence, the pregnant wife is killed by Caleb, who ends up being in jail and Jeremy is back with family.
Firstly, the end of the film was so bizzare and random that it didn't make any sense at all. The writing was decent but the acting is so bad, it all looks pretty wooden. Sean Lockhart has improved from his previous stints but still has a lot to learn if he wants to get into mainstream acting. As an audience, we don't invested in any character whatsoever, neither Caleb's nor Jeremy for that matter. From the start the relationship between Caleb and Jeremy seemed more weird than genuine and as it began to unravel the situations weren't particularly suspenseful or psychologically deep. There are unnecessary naked scenes purely for titilation and almost every other scene has the two of them wearing fancy underwears (this was a good promotion, if at all). As I mentioned above, the film was stretched beyond it had to. An interesting premise is ruined by poor direction, acting and execution.
Its a superficial film which could have been good with better execution. For now, if you are looking for some good looking actor with ample skin show, go ahead and have your feast. (3.5/10)
