Thomas and Stéphane are a wealthy, happy gay couple living in France. All they really want at this point is to raise a kid together. Through this whole comedic chain of events, they head to Martinique to buy a black baby, and end up getting scammed out of five thousand francs in the process. Eventually they manage to track the guy down and get their money back. Along the way they run into Carole, a friendly and attractive woman who actually helps them recover the cash. They talk her into becoming their surrogate, but she insists it has to happen through natural conception only. The rest of the movie basically follows them trying to make that work, and eventually they go along with it, sleeping with her, and end up becoming dads to twins.
The copy I watched had some genuinely terrible subtitles, sometimes they weren't even there at all, so honestly there were chunks of the film I just couldn't follow. Like, how exactly did Carole talk the couple into doing it the natural way? Even after a few attempts it apparently didn't work out. Setting that confusion aside for a second, I think the whole point of this movie, considering it came out back in 1990, was purely to entertain. I didn't notice anything in here that felt like it was mocking the gay community or making them the butt of the joke. Sometimes a movie just wants to be fun, and that's honestly what this felt like it was going for. The cast had great chemistry together. The mom character was funny too. I really wish I could've understood more of what was happening. Production quality was decent, though it gave off more of a made for TV kind of feel. At this point I think it's probably too late for anyone to bother putting out a proper DVD release with working subtitles. Still, overall I'd say it was perfectly fine.
Bottom line, dated but harmless fun, held back mostly by bad subtitles. (5/10)
