Madfabulous (UK)

Madfabulous retells the real story of Henry Cyril Paget, the fifth Marquess of Anglesey out in Wales, a guy who came back at the tail end of the 1800s to claim his aristocratic title, only for his over the top lifestyle to put him at odds with practically everyone around him. It's a genuinely gorgeous film to watch, worth checking out honestly just for the incredible outfits alone on its iconic queer lead. This version does stray from what actually happened growing up in his real life, but it still pulls in all the major chapters of his story and turns them into something visually rich and beautifully done. Nothing about his sexuality gets stated outright anywhere in the film, but it's pretty clear he's meant to read as queer, which should make this an easy watch for queer film fans. Back in the 1890s, Paget, the black sheep of his family, shows up in North Wales to take on his title as the fifth Marquess of Anglesey, and immediately shocks his uptight relatives with how mu...

Kill Your Darlings

I wanted to like this film. I really did. Having heard so much about it and reading critics positive reviews, I was almost sure that this movie is going to be great. And of course, what happens; After having sat through 4 sessions and finally finishing the film, I was glad that it ended. Another example for me on how expectations really burst your bubble. I think I need to rethink these true autobiographical kind of stories because there is so much there that the makers pack in them, and if you do not have the context of who's who before watching the film, you will be completely lost like me.

The film chronicles early life of the famous poet Allen Ginsberg. He gets a seat in Columbia University and soon meets Lucien , a rowdy, anti-establishment student in the college. Ginsberg discovers that Lucien's papers are all written by David, who is older to him and also probably an ex-lover. David loves Lucien and but the latter is just using him. Rebellious writer William and a sailor Jack also hangs out with the group. Ginsberg takes part in various extreme escapades with this extraordinary group of people. Allen has crush on Lucien and he knows that. So Lucien tells David that he is done with him and recruits Allen to write his term papers. When Allen finds out Lu probably doesn't love him as much he does, he is heartbroken. A confrontation between Lu and David, ends up David being dead by stabbing and drowning. Lucien is arrested and he requests Allen to write his deposition for him. Initially reluctant to help, Ginsberg goes about riding about the truth of what happened and what's the history behind David and Lucien's relationship and writes a piece entitled "The Night In Question". After reading it, Lu begs Allen to not release it because it can ruin him. The friendship sours and Ginsberg gets expelled from college but gets a encouraging note form his professor to pursue his writing.

The film boasts of excellent performances by everyone specially by Daniel Radcliffe as Ginsberg and Dane DeHaan as Lucien. As I mentioned above, my problem is with the first half of the film. You see so many characters being introduced, it becomes a little hard to keep a track of who's who and what their relationship with each other is. And this is when it help to have some sort of prior background information. The film is an intellectual moral maze and not exactly an entertainer. The movie although sometimes confident, is an obsessive and complicated re-telling of enigmatic characters placed in a deceitful and over-dramatized tragedy of murder. The movie feels drowned in the water with average narrative clichés weighing it down despite some really good performances. Also, it doesn’t deal very sensitively with the issues sexuality presented for these period characters. Maybe it wasn't important but then why show the scene where Ginsberg loses his virginity.

Kill Your Darlings isn’t exactly bad, it’s just a bit boring and misguided, and it failed to keep my attention at it despite I trying my best. (5/10)

Hey Oh,

I was just goofing around on the internet and found this here blog. Kind of blew my mind, as I've been on a huge Queer Film binge recently - recently being the last couple of years. I kind of can't believe I haven't stumbled across this in previous goof-sessions. Love the reviews. You've got a new regular reader.

I'm not sure what level of development a project has to be at for you to check it out, but my production company just launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund our own little Queer Noir. I'll include a link at the end of this email - obviously we're looking for community support to bring attention to our page, so I turned to google to find people that might dig it, but I fully understand if writing about something at this stage wouldn't be something you're comfortable with. Rest assured that as soon as we're done you'll be one of the first outlets we turn to to get the word out.

Thanks for taking the time,

Liam

Phor Lae Lukchai (Thai) [Father & Son]

I think the budget of this film was probably too small, but for that, the film definitely offers a different and unique storyline without over dramatizing anything. Yes, some scenes were a bit amateurish but in the bigger scheme of things, that can be overlooked. The film is both beautiful and sad in its own unique way. Aek is a gay dad, whose partner died right around the time their son Nueng was born through surrogacy in a road accident. The relationship between father and son is unpleasant and unstable. We are not really told why, but it seems the father has been unsuccessful in caring and loving his son because of his partner's death. Aek continues to hook up wit hookers. Also, Nueng is constantly bullied by everyone around him for having a gay dad. He has no friends, except Nat, a neighborhood boy, who also happens to be Nueng's boyfriend. In a sudden turn of events Nat is found murdered along with another boy naked. Saddened by the events, Nueng jumps from roof and k...

Gaya Sa Pelikula (Filipino Series) [Like In The Movies]

Pinoy BL series seem to be catching up to the popularity of the Thai shows. And I must say that they are doing a pretty good job at it. Where Thai series started to get repetitive with so many shows based in a college setting with seemingly similar storylines, Pinoy series are offering the viewers with new and interesting stories and some really good sets and surroundings. This series was 8 episodes of about 25-20 minutes each. Karl, a 19-year old introvert architecture student is in the middle of an identity crisis. Prior to the start of the second semester in college and forced by his parents, he moves into his uncle's condominium unit so that he can learn to be financially independent. Karl takes on odd jobs online to do so. But when one of his major clients suddenly goes MIA, he is left short on funds and without a means to pay for his utilities. An opportunity presents itself when his cocky neighbor Vlad has to hide from his family and proposes to share Karl's space for th...

The Tuxedo (Thai Series)

When I saw this series with 8 episodes of about 20-25 minutes each, I thought, good: Finally someone has come to senses and made a show which is not stretched out and they have tried to squeeze in a decent storyline in a good small episode format. But unfortunately, despite a decent premise on hand, the clunky writing, bad screenplay and an extreme tasteless portrayal of mental illness makes this show, not a fun watch. By the time it finishes, you just want to laugh off at the entire absurdity of it all. Aioun is talented tuxedo designer and very much in demand but he has handful of clients and he builds suits only for people who he feels a connection to. One night when his younger brother is about to get mugged, he is helped by a total stranger named Sichol. Since he tears his suit in the fight and has an interview the next day, Aioun gifts him a suit form his design as an expression of thanks. Sichol's interview is for. Personal assistant of a man named Nawee, a wealthy heir to h...
