A Revry original, Unconventional is a really well-liked queer dramedy that feels totally different from the usual stuff. The heart of the story is about two pretty eccentric queer siblings and their partners trying to build a family that doesn't follow the traditional rules. It takes a super raw and unfiltered look at queer life, diving deep into things like mental health, addiction, and how complicated identity and relationships can get. It’s not afraid to get messy or show people at their most vulnerable, and it really pushes boundaries while showing a lot of different queer experiences. The first season has nine episodes, and each one is about a half-hour long. The story centers on Noah, a grad student who’s been struggling for years to wrap up his PhD. He’s been with his husband, Dan, for nine years, and they’ve recently gotten married and moved to Palm Springs. While they're trying to figure out how to start a family and have a baby, they decide to shake things up by in...
This film is a collection of three different stories. I have a feeling that makers tried to show some sort of connection between the three (as if it was the story of the same couple and what they have been going through over a period of time, and hence the title) but there are enough concrete scenes to prove otherwise. So for now we will just go with the fact that it was three different stories.
The first story introduces us to two young boys who are best friends. One night when they stay together to finish work, one of them asks to practice kiss with the other one, since he has never done it before. Soon enough both of them realize that they have feelings for each other and they would be better off as boyfriends. The story ends with them going on a holiday together happy and cheerful. The boys here were very cute and thankfully the story wasn't stretched at all. To the point and focused.
In the second story, we meet a gay couple who have been together for two years and they are a famous internet sensation with huge fan following. Though, with popularity comes issues. Soon, one of them start getting. Threatening messages that he is watching them etc. This freaks him out but his boyfriend doesn't think much of him. Bu the stranger eventually shows up and kills one of the guys and takes the other guy as his captive. Ace there, a secret is revealed that this other guy was once almost smitten by this stranger but left him when he saw the scars on his face, leading this guy to go into depression of no one ever loving him and eventually accidentally being the reason for the death of his mother. The film has a vague ending. This film could have been so much better, but the stalker angle wasn't convincing enough and wasn't developed properly. Thankfully one of the actors here was quite cute but sadly he is the one who gets bumped off.
In the final story, we meet a boy taking care of his ailing father and going through some sort of sadness. We are not very sure what the sorrow is from, though. One day a tourist shows up asking to rent a room. He is actually tired of his girlfriend and wants a break. But now being with this guy, he feels happy and he is himself. Even for our boy, its is after a long time he sees someone loving him and caring for him. They confess their feelings for each other. This story was a bit off for me. I don't think a proper background was established for the main character and what was the issue of his father's illness and the eventual sorrow.
Part of me still thinks the stories were connected somehow (and they changed the names), mostly because of the title of this film. Maybe the two boys grow up being a couple and becoming internet sensation. The guy who stays alive in the second story ends up being on bed for the rest o this life and somehow has a son now who was his ex lover reborn. I know its a crazy theory but no way for me to verify. The ending shows us that the lead of third story had same name os the guy from first story but thats it. Overall, the film and stories were strictly ok. The kisses and intimacy was awkward between every couple. It's strictly to be watched if you hav nothing else better. (4/10)
