A Revry original, Unconventional is a really well-liked queer dramedy that feels totally different from the usual stuff. The heart of the story is about two pretty eccentric queer siblings and their partners trying to build a family that doesn't follow the traditional rules. It takes a super raw and unfiltered look at queer life, diving deep into things like mental health, addiction, and how complicated identity and relationships can get. It’s not afraid to get messy or show people at their most vulnerable, and it really pushes boundaries while showing a lot of different queer experiences. The first season has nine episodes, and each one is about a half-hour long. The story centers on Noah, a grad student who’s been struggling for years to wrap up his PhD. He’s been with his husband, Dan, for nine years, and they’ve recently gotten married and moved to Palm Springs. While they're trying to figure out how to start a family and have a baby, they decide to shake things up by in...
There was absolutely no point of making this film. Someone could argue that this is to educate young teenagers that there is a lot of people out there who are ready to take undue advantage and hence they should be careful. But in today's day and age, I find that hard to digest. This tale has been told plenty of times before.
16 year old Luke wants to become a model. He lives in suburbs of NYC and uses Grindr to chat with men. He leaves home to go to city, when his father physically abuses him and he has had enough. He had been chatting with a model co-ordinator Rich who lets him stay at his place and pretty much take care of him. On the side we have this photographer named Tim, who has some sort of arrangement with Rich for shooting models where he pays him. I am not sure I understood that whole angle. Tim is closet gay with a fiancé and he keeps lying to himself. He takes a liking for Luke but Rich asks him to keep his hands off. One day Luke sees Rich literally abusing and forcing another young kid into prostitution but continues to stay with him. Soon the day comes when Rich asks Luke to go and make his client "very happy". Unwillingly Luke goes but eventually leaves and comes back. A very angry Rich rapes Luke and in a fight Luke kills Rich. Luckily, Tim, who has now been dumped by his fiancé, arrives there and takes on the blame on himself.
This film drags way too much. The shots just go on forever without rhyme or reason. Even from the stry perspective, it's boring and senseless. Random shots of people looking shocked or trying to emote is very laughable. Acting is terrible. Tim also happens to be director of the film and clearly obsessed with showing himself naked , for absolutely no reason whatsoever in the film. The only good thing about the film is Luke. He is really cute and acts decent. But I have to say that as a character, he clearly has no brain. Why would you stay with someone who clearly abuses, and then on top of that you come back to him after refusing to work for him. Clearly, he is looking for trouble. There are better ways to showing the message that NYC can be brutal being a meat grinder which eats some people up, chews on them, and spits them out.
A very badly conceived and executed movie that should never have been made. (3/10)
