Coming out of the same studio that gave us RuPaul's Drag Race, and stacked with a whole crew of former contestants, Stop! That! Train! plays like RuPaul basically taking a bow for the entire franchise she's built. It's not really a gay film in the traditional sense, but with so many drag stars from Ru's shows popping up alongside a few cameos from well known out gay actors, I figured it earns a spot on this blog anyway. The whole thing is completely over the top, packed with GenZ slang, loud flashy visuals, and humor that's constantly winking at you knowing how ridiculous it is. Going in you'd assume it's meant to be a laugh riot, and a lot of critics online seem to be eating it up, but I just couldn't get into it at all. This BL is easily one of the worst things to hit the screen in recent memory, and I’m saying that after having sat through plenty of truly bottom-of-the-barrel shows. The plot is paper-thin, the acting feels totally amateur, and the direction is just a disaster. It drags on for ten episodes that are forty-five minutes each, which feels like an eternity when there is just about nothing in the entire series worth talking about.
The story is about a university student named Sia who is trying to make it as a musician, though his life is mostly just quiet and full of uncertainty. He goes out for an audition to join the music club, and he's actually shocked when the club president picks him—which also catches the rest of the members off guard. Things take a weird turn when he gets home and finds a guitar sitting in his room. The second he starts playing it, the ghost of a singer named Blue pops up. It turns out Blue was a senior at the same college who died a few years back. Blue’s sudden return from the dead brings up a lot more than just a scare; it starts a connection that Sia never expected. Blue has no clue why he’s stuck there, but he decides to use the time to teach Sia about music. Meanwhile, Sia tries to dig into the mystery of what actually happened to Blue in the music club, how they might be linked, and if there's any way to help Blue find some kind of peace.
I honestly suspect this might have been a school project or something similar, especially since the opening titles mention it was sponsored by the School of Communication Arts at Bangkok University. I don't even want to waste my time explaining every single reason why this show is terrible. The script is just poor, the acting is mediocre at best, and the direction is honestly awful. You feel like the same exact things are being repeated over and over and over again without any point. They threw in a ton of subplots and side characters that contribute absolutely nothing to the main plot and just serve as distractions. Even when they finally get to the end and show how Blue died and how close he was to the club president, it doesn't actually wrap anything up or give any real closure. Plus, the sudden romance between the president and Sia felt like it came out of nowhere. Blue just keeps appearing and vanishing for no apparent reason, and it's never explained.
Seriously, I would strongly suggest you just stay far away from this one. Do not, under any circumstances, waste your time watching this. I really wish someone had been there to warn me before I started it. (0/10)
