Chained To My Bully Stepbrother (AI Vertical BL Drama)

This is the second vertical AI BL drama I've sat through, and honestly I went in knowing better. I had it on while I was doing cardio at the gym, and what struck me was just how much the plot echoed the last one I watched. Same step brother romance angle, same mystery girlfriend showing up near the end, same extra guy pining after one of the leads. Genuinely the only thing going for it was the runtime, the whole thing wrapped up in forty five minutes flat.  The setup kicks off with Finn moving schools because his mom just married into money. He finds out his new step brother Aiden goes to the same place, and he's warned to keep his distance from him. Their first run in at school is rocky, just like you'd expect, but there's this odd pull between them neither can shake off. Finn keeps telling himself not to read into it because Aiden's straight and openly homophobic. Things shift when some kids start bullying Finn and the student council president, Ryan, steps in to ...

Watching films during the AIDS epidemic time are never easy to watch. Even of the films are badly made, they constantly remind you of the horror that people went through and make you appreciate the life and flexibilities that we as queer folks have today. Despite having seen a lot of content set in those times, seeing something new always stirs up emotions of all kinds.

This was a made for TV movie that came out way back in 1993. Anna and Keith are a happily married couple of many years. By accident Anna discovers that Keith has actually been having an affair with a man named Steve. Anna and Steve meet and talk about Keith and during these conversations, Steve asks Anna to get tested. He tells her that he always had protected sex with Keith but given that she may have not, it's better to know the truth now than later. On confronting Keith with the possibility, it freaks him out and he refuses to get tested. Anna eventually tests negative. But, in the process she ends up befriending Jin, Steve's best friend, who is suffering from AIDS and is in his last phase of life. We are also introduced to Jim's parents who at one point had completely disowned him. But now with the news of him being sick, the mother comes around, but the father doesn't cave in. Jim's mother along-with Anna take real good care of Jim with support from Steve. Jim is a very happy and content and a positive guy who always takes things in his stride, including what would be the closing number that should be played in his funeral. His eventual death, so very expected, shakes everyone to the core. Anna and Keith get back together, and from what I understood from the film, Keith probably has tested positive and now Anna will take care of him.

As much the film is about a couple breaking up over homosexual issues, I think the film's core is more about love and compassion. There are incidents that happens in one's life that define you and make you realize what defines yourself. Your priorities change. and this is what happens with Anna. It's not very clear as to why she decides to join into taking care of Jim, but clearly there is a connection that the two have. Maybe it was to understand what do some of the folks go through in the so called horror of being infected with HIV. The world in those days was fragile and sensitive but also evil when people would make life difficult for folks with AIDS. The whole breakup between Keith and Steve was as abrupt as was Anna's and Keith's but like I said , I believe that the films idea to focus on was the compassion and love and sensitivity towards individuals who are sick. Thankfully none of the performances are over the top and are all very nuanced.

It's a very watchable film, if you can keep aside your prejudices against HIV and AIDS. Actually if you still have prejudices against either of that, it speaks a lot about you as a person and maybe you need help and education. (6/10)

I think the budget of this film was probably too small, but for that, the film definitely offers a different and unique storyline without over dramatizing anything. Yes, some scenes were a bit amateurish but in the bigger scheme of things, that can be overlooked. The film is both beautiful and sad in its own unique way. Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground.
